Winning it for the team – Employees of Year speak out
Riwal UK always strives to work to a high standard – so what does it feel like to be named Employees of the Year?
Stuart Bevan and Steve Hide reveal what it means to be 2018’s award winners.
Commitment to safety and attention to detail
Stuart Bevan, Foreman at the Wellingborough Depot, was named Riwal UK Employee of the Year.
He says he was shocked to win the award, as he was not expecting such an accolade.
“You are only as good as your team,” he says. “We all work together and without the team behind me, we’re nothing.”
Stuart is known for his absolute commitment to safety and attention to detail, from working on the machines to checking that everyone is wearing the correct PPE at all times.
He says: “I carry out safety tests, under LOLER regulations, on all the machines. If it’s got my name on it, it has to be safe.
“I’m always thinking about the next customer using the machine and I encourage the team to imagine it’s their mate working up there at height.
“This is the Riwal Way and it’s the way we do it. Basically, don’t second guess. If it doesn’t look right, it doesn’t go out.”
Training others to work safely
Senior Instructor Steve Hide says he felt privileged to be named Employee of the Year at ALS Safety, Riwal UK’s health and safety training division.
“The whole team deserves the award, he adds. “We all work really hard.”
ALS Safety delivers accredited training, including IPAF and PASMA, to groups of four to twelve people, seven days a week – and often at night for shift workers.
In fact, many of Steve’s workmates suspect he never goes home, as he always seems to be there, ready to lend a hand.
He says: “I’m qualified to train people at all levels, so I suppose I’m useful to have around.
“Our training sessions are usually fully-booked and we’re not just training UK operators. I run training sessions all over Europe.”
For Steve, job satisfaction comes with the territory. He says: “I meet lots of people doing the training. And I have the satisfaction of getting people to the right level of skill to work safely.”
ALS Safety Training also offers training on harnesses, working in confined spaces, abrasive wheels and site management.
