IPAF borrows Riwal UK VR simulator for major exhibition

Riwal Simulator at IPAF stand

IPAF Benelux has exhibited powered access rental and sales specialist Riwal UK’s virtual reality training simulator at Vertkaaldagen Benelux.

The move gave visitors to the IPAF stand a chance to get a close-up view of the simulator, one of only a few delivered to powered access companies in Europe.

Virtual reality (VR) training simulators are a talking point in the powered access industry and the subject of an industry-wide consultation by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), which promotes safe and effective use of powered access worldwide.

Darren Verschuren, Managing Director of Riwal UK’s training division, ALS Safety Ltd, delivered the VR machine to Vertkaaldagen Benelux, held in Gorinchem, Netherlands, on 5-7 November 2018.

He has taken it to Riwal training facilities and customers sites across Europe, delivering bespoke training for the operation of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs).

Darren has also used interest VR simulation to talk to key technical leaders and decision-makers across industries that use powered access about the future of safety training.

He said: “IPAF is consulting to find out what people’s opinions are of training using VR simulators. They are proving to be a popular way of engaging people and getting them thinking seriously about MEWP safety training.

“VR simulation training is highly-immersive and realistic. It allows trainees to be placed in high-risk situations when they are still in a safe environment, which would not be possible with conventional training.

“Powered access users can also explore and practice solutions to highly-technical and difficult access projects, which is often desirable for our customers across many industries, including aerospace, renewable energy, construction and facilities maintenance.

“In those situations, even very experienced operators will benefit from specialist training to work safely and productively.  Using Riwal UK’s VR simulator is likely to be the best place to start.”
